Recovery

With 18 years of experience, Sheri provides compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals and families navigating eating disorders — in collaboration with the full team needed for lasting recovery.

Understanding

What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious, complex mental health conditions — not lifestyle choices, phases, or simple issues of willpower. They involve persistent disturbances in eating behaviors, body image, and the intense emotional distress that drives them.

They affect people of every age, gender, body size, and background. They are among the most medically dangerous psychiatric conditions, and they are also among the most treatable when the right support is in place. Recovery is not just possible — it happens every day.

Anorexia Nervosa

Characterized by severely restricted food intake, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image. It carries one of the highest mortality rates of any mental health condition.

Bulimia Nervosa

A cycle of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging, fasting, or excessive exercise — driven by shame, secrecy, and a desperate need for control.

Binge Eating Disorder

Recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food, often very quickly and to the point of discomfort, accompanied by feelings of loss of control and significant distress.

ARFID

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder involves extreme selectivity around food not driven by body image concerns — often rooted in sensory sensitivities, fear of choking, or traumatic food experiences.

Other Specified Feeding & Eating Disorders (OSFED)

A broad category covering presentations that cause significant distress but don't meet the full criteria of other diagnoses — equally serious and fully treatable.

Clinical Approach

How Sheri Treats Eating Disorders

Every person's relationship with food, their body, and their emotions is unique. Sheri integrates multiple evidence-based modalities — tailored to the individual — to address both the surface behaviors and the deeper drivers beneath them.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify and reshape the distorted thoughts and beliefs that fuel disordered eating — challenging the internal dialogue that keeps the cycle going.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT builds the emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness skills needed to navigate the intense feelings that often drive disordered eating behaviors.

EMDR Therapy

Many eating disorders are rooted in trauma. EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer drive avoidance or harmful coping behaviors.

Strengths-Based Approach

Recovery is built on what already works. Sheri identifies each client's existing coping strengths and helps them expand — not erase — who they are.

Whole-Person Care

A Team Around You

Eating disorder recovery rarely happens in a single office. True healing requires a coordinated team. Sheri actively communicates and collaborates with every professional involved in your care — so no one is working in isolation. If you don't yet have a team, Sheri can help connect you with trusted providers in the Gilbert area and beyond.

Registered Dietitian / Nutritionist

Rebuilding a healthy relationship with food requires both emotional and nutritional support. Sheri coordinates with registered dietitians to ensure meal plans complement the emotional work happening in session.

Medical Physician

Eating disorders have serious physical health consequences. Sheri collaborates with physicians to monitor medical stability — including labs, vitals, and any need for higher levels of care.

Psychiatrist / Prescribing Provider

When medication may support recovery — such as for co-occurring anxiety, depression, or OCD — Sheri works alongside prescribing providers to create a fully integrated treatment plan.

Family & Support System

Loved ones are often a vital part of recovery. Sheri integrates family members and caregivers into treatment when appropriate, providing psychoeducation and communication tools.

"Recovery is not a destination — it's a relationship you build with yourself, one day at a time."

— Sheri Robenstine, LPC

The Journey

What to Expect Working with Sheri

01

An Honest First Conversation

The first session is about understanding your story — not judging it. Sheri creates a space where you can be honest about where you are, what you've tried, and what you need.

02

A Personalized Treatment Plan

No two recoveries look the same. Sheri develops an individualized plan that addresses your specific behaviors, emotional patterns, history, and goals — and adjusts it as you grow.

03

Building Your Care Team

If you don't have a full support network yet, Sheri will work with you to identify what's missing — and help connect you with dietitians, physicians, or other providers who complement the work in therapy.

04

Sustainable Skills, Not Quick Fixes

Using CBT, DBT, and EMDR, Sheri equips you with practical, lasting tools to manage emotions, challenge harmful thoughts, and build a different relationship with food and your body.

05

Ongoing, Adaptive Support

Recovery isn't linear. Sheri stays present through setbacks, celebrates milestones, and adapts the approach when life changes. You're never starting over — you're always moving forward.
